Text last updated on 16 January 2017 | Capt. Henrique DeJesus Duarte (1921-2006), who built this home in 1973, was among the modern giants of the fishery. He was — that rare thing in Provincetown in the late 20th century — a native of Portugal, born in Viana de Castelo, on the northernmost coast, where he learned the trade of a dory fishing. Duarte arrived in America in 1946 and brought his family over two years later. In 1951, he assumed the command of F/V Charlotte G. After 32 more years at sea, he retired. But not completely. He continued mending and making nets for the fleet, according to his obituary in The Cape Cod Times. His wife, Maria DeGuia (Barros) Duarte (1921-1999), was only 10 days his junior. Their children include Raymond Duarte of Provincetown and Vincent Duarte of North Truro. The captain’s home was — let us say without being unkind — not as distinguished as he was. It profited from a recent remodeling by the current owner, Joseph Freitas, in which faux-mansard battered walls on the second floor were eliminated and the whole was reclad in wood. The home was transformed into a two-unit condo.
