Text last updated on 5 January 2024 | Airport history in Provincetown begins the 1930s, with a rudimentary landing field. (The great scrapbook historian Althea Boxell could not bring herself to really call it an “airport.”) In 1936, Provincetown actually enjoyed regularly scheduled passenger service to Boston on the short-lived Mayflower Airlines. The company was headed by Lieut. Parker W. Gray, who also happened to be its chief pilot. The photograph shows just how scrappy the landing field was before John C. Van Arsdale took over, and may help explain why Mayflower service ended so quickly after it began.
