Text last updated on 18 February 2017 | Before the Civil War, it would have been possible to look across Provincetown Harbor and see the silhouettes of windmills on the horizon, marking the salt works on Long Point, along the southern shore of the Lobster Plain. The extensive nature of the sites, at which salt was evaporated from seawater as a preservative agent, can be seen on the map above.
