Updated on 7 August 2026 | A gale on 12 July 1888 brought the three-masted, 259-foot A. G. Ropes, flagship of the I. F. Chapman Company of Maine, to our shores. The damaged and dismasted ship was repaired at the John G. Whitcomb Shipyard, 467 Commercial Street, before proceeding on 29 September to San Francisco with oil and coal. There was no Panama Canal then, so it took another 110 days to reach California.1
