Text last updated on 19 July 2016 | Shankpainter Sails, as its name suggests, is oriented largely to Shank Painter Road, though it has the street address 54 Bradford. There are seven buildings in the compound, along either sides of a walkway that parallels the road, but is largely unseen by the public. A small cottage colony has stood here since 1940. The building at No. 54 was the home in 1958 of the Candids by Carter photo business. That would have been Ralph Carter (b ±1916), who was also a cook and fisherman. In the 1960s, the cottage colony was known as Browns Cottages, which were evidently superintended by Clayton F. Enos (b 1927). A 1965 narcotics raid on the cottages netted 11 young men and women, one of whom was charged with “lewd and lascivious cohabitation.” In the early 1980s, this was the Shank Painter Motel. The 17-unit condo was created in 1988 by Suzanne Gouveia of Jamaica Plain, Mass. Salon 54, owned by Brian J. Cabral (b 1958), has been in business here since the late 1980s.
