Text last updated on 12 December 2016 | Lila Katzen (1925-1998), a leading abstract sculptor of the post-war period, bought this property with her husband, Philip, in 1960. Katzen, a Brooklyn native, took classes at the Art Students League (which all but served as a hatchery for generations of Provincetown artists), was graduated from Cooper Union, and then studied under Hans Hofmann. One of her monumental ribbon-like metal sculptures, Bradford With Curl, can be seen in the sculpture garden of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, which also owns the smaller Crest and Mini Serpent. The Katzens’ son, Hal Katzen, graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. In the mid-1980s, he opened his first gallery, in SoHo. The Hal Katzen Gallery is currently at 11 East 78th Street in Manhattan. He continues to own 307 Bradford — an unusually long continuum in modern Provincetown.
