23 Blueberry Avenue

23 Blueberry Avenue. [2016, Dunlap]

Dr. Chester I. Solomon (1918-2007), who lived here, was no ordinary dentist. Trained at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (he was Harvard undergrad, too), Solomon served during World War II in the Dental Corps, attached to the 453rd Bombardment Group, rising to the rank of captain. The group was based in East Anglia, England, and it was during this period that Solomon developed his first important love relationship, with the dramatist Paul Ellison. Back in the States, he practiced privately, taught at Tufts and administered dental programs at Beth Israel Hospital and Boston University. In 1964, Rafael A. Cruz-Alvarez (1928-1997), a Cuban-born photographer’s assistant, came into Solomon’s life and the men were together for 33 years. Longer, really, since they are buried together at Town Cemetery. Solomon organized life drawing classes in the late 1990s at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and the classes, given on Tuesdays and Fridays year-round, continue to bear his name.

Blueberry Avenue is the cross-axis thoroughfare to Bayberry Avenue in the Meadowview Heights subdivision, a sprawling 74-lot development project initiated in 1983 by Matthew J. Costa on lands between Bradford Street Extension and Shank Painter Pond, reaching to the edge of the Cape Cod National Seashore and the crown of Blueberry Hill.
