Text last updated on 20 August 2016 | On 6 April 1945, one month before V-E Day in World War II — just one month! — 1st Lt. Matthew A. Gregory, 30 years old, who had landed with the Rangers at Normandy in the first wave of D-Day and been decorated with the Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star, and the Presidential Unit Citation, was killed in action in Germany. He left a wife, two brothers, an aunt, and his mother, Gertrude Gregory, of 29 Alden Street. Five years after his death, he was honored in the creation of this memorial at the foot of High Pole Hill, not far from his mother’s house.
