Sprawled over a four-acre hilltop site, the sheer size of the 55-room Seaglass Inn and Spa — known previously as the Chateau Motel, Best Western Chateau Motor Inn and Chateau Provincetown — is unlike anything in town. Two generations of the Gordon family were involved: William and Emily (Prada) Gordon opened the motel in 1958 and expanded it. They were followed in 1992 by their son, William Gordon Jr., and his wife, Charlotte. The Banner reported on 11 October 2007 that Gordon had “submitted an application to the planning board for approval of a 10-lot single-family-home subdivision on the property” and that the “motel would be demolished as part of the conversion.” But Gordon told me in 2017, “I never proposed tearing down the Chateau.” [See his full comment below.] The Gordons kept the Chateau ouvert until 2013, when they sold it to Nadine Licostie, a filmmaker, and her wife, Faith Licostie, an emergency-room nurse, who rechristened it Seaglass and reopened it in 2014.
William Gordon Jr. wrote on 11 October 2017: I never proposed tearing down the Chateau, which my father built in 1958. I was 12 years old when he built it and worked there my entire life. My wife and I purchased the property from my parents in 1992 and we purchased the former Tides property in 1993 from Wayne and Carol McCabe. In my opinion, if the Town of Provincetown had not forced us out of the Bay Harbour project [837 Commercial Street], we would still be in Provincetown operating the Chateau.
