Alternatively 576 Commercial Street
[2014, Dunlap]
Updated on 19 January 2026 | Yes, there is actually a Zero Conway Street. That address is memorialized on the assessor’s roles and on the 2013 deed conveying the property to Gary Danko, the celebrated San Francisco chef. The thumbnail biography on the Restaurant Gary Danko website states: “From his earliest days as chef at the Tucker Hill Inn in Vermont to subsequent years running award-winning kitchens in the Bay Area, including Beringer Vineyards and the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco, Danko dedicated himself to seasonal, locally grown and raised foods before the practice was widespread. At Restaurant Gary Danko, these ingredients are still the foundation of his adventurous and spirited cuisine and are never upstaged. While forging close relationships with artisanal cheese, meat, and produce suppliers to secure the best ingredients possible, Danko continues to push the envelope, incorporating culinary traditions, techniques, products, and seasonings from around the world to create a cuisine of great finesse and balanced flavors.”
While that sounds like so much promotional eyewash, Danko has earned his stripes. “The meal was superb from beginning to end,” Patricia Wells wrote in The New York Times of 14 December 2001, when the restaurant was two years old. “What’s more, service was in line with the finest you will find anywhere: attentive, intelligent, grown-up. … I always judge a menu by the number of dishes I would love to eat. On Danko’s, there were too many to count.” By its own account, the restaurant has won a grand award from Wine Spectator, a five-diamond rating from AAA, a Relais & Châteaux designation, and several James Beard Awards, including best new restaurant, best service, and best chef — California.
