Pilgrim Greenhouses

Text last updated on 28 May 2025 | This elaborate little network of greenhouses and hothouses existed only briefly in the late 1910s and early ’20s. They seem to have been the work of the Rev. James Biram (1849-1932), an English immigrant who served at one time as the pastor of the Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church and as a selectman of the Town. This notice appeared in the Advocate of 15 February 1917: “[William] Newtown, The Florist Having purchased the Pilgrim Greenhouses formerly owned by J. & A. E. [Annie Elizabeth] Biram, wishes to announce that he is now in an excellent position to fill all orders for the Cape. Our motto: We solicit trade and will endeavor to satisfy.” The Advocate further noted, on 13 September 1917, that a “very artistic addition in the way of a floral show room is being made on Florist Newton’s grounds.”
