Antone F. Veara (1865-1946) was born on the island of São Miguel in the Azores. He came to Provincetown in 1885. The next year, he married Mary Foster (1870-1940). Veara spent his early years as a fisherman, and his later years as a fish cutter for Atlantic Coast Fisheries. According to the 1900 census, he could neither read nor write, and he did not speak English. At the time of his death, he was survived by eight children, five of whom still lived in town: Emily (Veara) Marshall, Georgie (Veara) Day, Helen (Veara) Smith, Joseph Veara, and Manuel Veara.
